Part number:

Instructions
As from V3.0 it is possible to do the firmware update for an S7-1200 CPU also through the integrated web server. To perform the firmware update you must first enable the web server of your CPU.

When you update your operating system, always upgrade to the latest version. In some cases, however, it might be necessary to downgrade to a lower version. In this case, you must observe the following properties of the S7-1200 CPU after downloading a project.

  • If an S7-1200 CPU is upgraded from a low firmware version to a higher firmware version, the contained project is retained on the CPU.
  • However, if a S7-1200 CPU is downgraded from the current firmware to an older version of the firmware, the CPU is reset completely to the factory settings. The contained project is deleted and the CPU can only be accessed using the MAC address.

Enable web server of the CPU:

  1. In the project navigation you right-click the PLC folder and select the "Properties..." item in the pop-up menu that opens.
  2. Click the "Web server" item in the area navigation of the CPU Properties and activate the "Enable web server on this module" option in the right window under "Web server".

Fig. 01

  1. Acknowledge the subsequent security message with OK and close the dialog.
  2. Save and compile your device configuration and download your program into the CPU.

Perform firmware update:

  1. As for every firmware update you unpack the compressed firmware file in a directory on your hard disk.
  2. Start the Internet Explorer and enter the IP address of your CPU in the address bar.
  3. When the web page appears, click "Enter".
  4. You must log in first before the "Update Firmware" button is shown in the navigation area. Enter the name "admin" top left. If you have assigned a password for your CPU, you also enter the password and click "Log in".
  5. After updating the screen you click "Update Firmware" in the navigation area.
  6. In the "Update Firmware" dialog that opens you put your CPU into STOP mode by clicking the "Go to STOP" button.
  7. Use the "Browse..." button to navigate to the directory on your hard disk where you have stored the update files. In the "FWUPDATE.S7S" file you must select the file with the extension ".upd".

Fig. 02

  1. Then click the "Load" button to start the update procedure. The "Loading file... Please wait." message is displayed during the firmware update. The RUN/STOP LED lights continuously and the MAINT LED flashes.
  2. Once the firmware has been downloaded to the CPU successfully only the RUN/STOP LED lights continuously. Click OK to put the CPU into RUN mode.

Note
Compared to a firmware update by means of the memory card you only need one file (.upd) here. If you update using the memory card, two files are always copied to the memory card - "FWUPDATE.S7S" and "S7_JOB.S7S".

Why do you get a prompt to restart MS Windows after installing STEP 7 V11, although the PC has already been booted?Go to beginning
Part number:

Description
A restart is required after installing or uninstalling STEP 7 V11, because the system files blocked in the current mode have to be updated or deleted, or if DLL files are opened by other applications at the same time.

The Microsoft Windows operating system uses the DLL (Dynamic Link Library) files to reduce the memory space required by an application on the hard disk and in the main memory. Any program code is stored in a separate file on the hard disk and is loaded only once into the main memory

  • if the program code is needed by more than one application or
  • if multiple programs need the same program library.

If multiple applications have different versions or if the required version is missing in a program, conflicts might arise if the same DLL files are needed.

In MS Windows, the installation routines or updates make a list of which system or DLL files have to be moved, renamed or deleted at the next system start and enter them in the registry code "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager". The entries in the "PendingFileRenameOperations" value are processed the next time the system is started and the value is deleted.

It might happen that for system reasons MS Windows does not delete these entries in the "PendingFileRenameOperations" value during the boot procedure. However, after a restart Windows nevertheless recognizes that files have been registered for renaming or deleting and that the installation or deinstallation has not yet been completed. You get the message:

  • "Please reboot before installing any more programs".

If you restart your PC and the entries in the value "PendingFileRenameOperations" are once again not deleted during the boot procedure, the behavior described above is repeated. This can happen in all Microsoft Windows operating systems.

Remedy
Delete the registry code "PendingFileRenameOperations". A detailed procedure for this remedy is available in Entry ID 8861819.

Important
This entry contains information for editing the registry. You should make a backup copy of the registry before editing it. More information on making a backup copy, restoring and editing the registry is available in the Microsoft Knowledge Base in Entry ID 256986. Incorrect use of the registry editor can cause serious problems that affect the complete system and make it necessary to reinstall the operating system. You use the registry editor at your own risk.

How do you update the hardware catalog in STEP 7 (TIA Portal)?Go to beginning
Part number:

Instructions
STEP 7 (TIA Portal) provides the option of updating your hardware catalog. The following entries include downloads for extending the hardware catalog of your version of STEP 7 (TIA Portal). The downloads contain the software components (Support Packages) needed for the modules and can be transferred to a PC with STEP 7 Professional or STEP 7 Basic using a memory stick, for example.

  • Please go to Entry ID 72341852 for downloading the Support Packages for STEP 7 (TIA Portal) V12.
  • Please go to Entry ID 54164095 for downloading the Support Packages for STEP 7 (TIA Portal) V11.

The following table describes you how you can use the download of the Support Packages (HSPs) to update your hardware catalog.

No. Procedure
1

Preparation
In the TIA Portal you open the page with the Support Packages for the Hardware Catalog and then click the required download icon. Unpack the *.zip file and copy the enclosed *.isp12 files into a directory to which you have access with STEP 7 Basic or Professional.

Note
Pay attention to the software requirements specified for each Support Package (for example "for STEP 7 Professional V12" means that at least STEP 7 Professional V12 or a higher Service Pack of the same version must be installed).

  • Hardware Support Packages with the file extension "*.isp12" are for STEP 7 (TIA Portal) V12.
  • Hardware Support Packages with the file extension "*.isp11" are for STEP 7 (TIA Portal) V11.
2 Open the TIA Portal and switch to Project View.
3 Use the "Tools > Support Packages" menu command to open the "Detailed information" dialog. When this dialog opens, the "Support Package Installation" tab is selected by default and the Support Packages already installed are shown in the right window.
4 Click the "Add from file system" button and navigate to the directory in which you have stored the downloaded *.isp12 files.
5 Select the required *.isp12 file.

Fig. 01

In this example we have selected the *.isp12 file of the HSP_V12_0050.

6 The HSP file for the installation is now displayed in the "Detailed information" dialog. The "Installed" column still indicates "No" for this HSP. Select the HSP file as shown in Fig. 02 and click on the "Install" button.

Fig. 02

7 Click "Continue" in the dialog that follows to start the installation.

Fig. 03

Note on STEP 7 (TIA Portal) V11
In STEP 7 (TIA Portal) V11 a message requesting you to close all instances appears instead of the dialog shown in Fig. 03. In this case you close all the open windows of the TIA Portal except the Installation window. The "Continue" button is then enabled. Click "Continue" to start the installation.

8 At the end of the installation a message is displayed indicating that the installation has been completed successfully. Click the "Finish" button and restart the TIA Portal. Now your hardware catalog in the TIA Portal is up to date. If you reopen the "Detailed information" dialog in the TIA Portal, the "Installed" column now indicates "Yes" for the HSP file.

9 Uninstallation of WinCC (TIA Portal) Professional
If installation of STEP 7 (TIA Portal) V12 aborts and you receive the message that you must uninstall WinCC Professional V11 beforehand even though you have already done the uninstallation, this might be due to a Registry code. Proceed as follows to remove the Registry entry in Windows 7, for example:
  1. In Windows 7 you open the Registry by going to "Search programs and files" and entering "Regedit". Confirm with Enter.
  2. Open the path:

In Windows 7 32-bit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Siemens\Automation\_InstalledSW\
TIAP11\TIA_ES_V11\PrivateProperties\INST_TYPE_LEVEL_INTERNAL

In Windows 7 64-bit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Siemens\
Automation\_InstalledSW\TIAP11\TIA_ES_V11\PrivateProperties\
INST_TYPE_LEVEL_INTERNAL

  1. Remove the entry "4_0_Professional".
  2. Do a restart and then you can install STEP 7 (TIA Portal) V12.
