Description
Check whether you have the correct license for your version of STEP 7 installed on your PC. A license is always valid for just one version3). If, for example, you have procured a Field PG with integrated license for STEP 7 Basic V10.5, then you can only open and work with that product. After installing STEP 7 V5.4, you also need a license for STEP 7 version V5.4 if you want to open the SIMATIC Manager3).

If, before the SIMATIC Manager opens, you get the message indicating that no valid license key can be found,

  • then either you have not installed a license
  • or you have installed a license that is not valid for your version of STEP 7. For example, if you have installed the license for V5.4 for STEP 7 V5.5.

Without a valid license you can only open STEP 7 if you activate the Trial License (limited to 14 days). Once the 14 days are over, you can open the SIMATIC Manager again only if you have transferred the license required for your version of STEP 7 to your PC. The table below gives an overview of the software versions. You need STEP 7 or STEP 7 Professional for programming the S7-300/400 modules. For example, you install the license for version V5.4 via the ALM (Automation License Manager).

Table 01

1) You can install the licenses when installing the software or later and also uninstall them again. You can store licenses on the following media:

  • License key floppy disks or sticks
  • Local hard disk
  • Hard disks of computers in the network

2) The licenses for these products are supplied on the installation data medium and are installed automatically during installation by the Setup. There is no separate installation storage medium (stick, floppy disk) with licenses and you cannot transfer the licenses to other computers.

3) As from STEP 7 V5.3 the licenses for STEP 7 V5.x are automatically also valid for the earlier versions of the same software.

If you uninstall the STEP 7 V10.5/V11 and WinCC Basic V10.5 products, the associated licenses are also uninstalled automatically with them. You should save any licenses you still need.

You can check whether the license required for your software is installed in the ALM (Fig. 01).

Note
The ALM is supplied together with the project on the installation medium and is installed automatically during installation of the product. However, you uninstall the software product, the ALM is not uninstalled automatically with it, because the ALM is used for managing the license keys of multiple Siemens products.
