1. Information on GSD files
In the GSD files(General Station Description) you get the communication characteristics of a PROFIBUS device. The GSD files get an ident number after certification from the Profibus user organization.
1.1 Language-dependent and independent GSD files With GSD files for Profibus DP you distinguish between language-dependent and independent GSD files. The language-independent GSD files are defined by the extension "*.gsd". Language-dependent GSD files are characterized by the language-related extension of the GSD file.
| No. |

1.2 GSD files for SIMATIC operator panels
For SIMATIC operator panels there are two different GSD files. These GSD files are not different in name but in application.
There are GSD files for:
- DP direct keys for S7 controllers
- S5 communication via Profibus DP
The contents of a GSD file can be verified with a data editing program such as "Notepad". The two GSD files of the same name differ through the user-defined modules. If modules such as "Class B tiny" and "Class B small" are included, then it is a GSD file for S5 communication via Profibus DP.
2. Storage paths of the GSD files There are two different GSD files for the SIMATIC Panels. You will find further information under Point 1.2.
2.1 GSD files for DP direct keys If in addition to ProTool or WinCC flexible the STEP 7 Manager was successfully installed on the configuration computer, then the GSD files for the DP direct keys are already included in the hardware catalog in the HW config of the STEP 7 Manager. No additional installation is necessary.
2.2 GSD files for S5 communication via Profibus DP
For the S5 communication via Profibus DP you have to add the required GSD files to your configuration software (for example COM Profibus).
The GSD files of the SIMATIC operator panels for the S5 communication via Profibus DP are installed on your PC under one of the following paths:
ProTool:
C:\Program Files\Siemens\PROTOOL\PLCProg\GSD
or
C:\Programs\Siemens\PROTOOL\PLCProg\GSD
WinCC flexible:
C:\Program Files\Siemens\SIMATIC WinCC flexible\WinCC flexible Support\PlcProg\GSD
or
C:\Programs\Siemens\SIMATIC WinCC flexible\WinCC flexible Support\PlcProg\GSD
3.Assignment and use of the GSD files
There are two different GSD files for the SIMATIC Panels. You will find further information under Point 1.2.
3.1 GSD files for DP direct keys The GSD files for the DP direct keys have the same designation including extension as is listed in the table - see 3.2 - below.
3.2 GSD files for S5 communication via Profibus DP
After successful installation of ProTool or WinCC flexible these GSD files are available on your configuration computer for the S5 communication via Profibus for the following operator panels:
