With the Automation License Manager ("ALM" V3.0) you can manage the floating license online. The license keys are stored on a central computer that serves as server computer. The SIMATIC Logon add-on package must also be installed. Using Logon you can conveniently control the use of your licenses on the local computer or on computers in a workgroup. Unauthorized access to licenses is prevented by a logon dialog and user administration. If there is no corresponding license available locally, you can use the license from the license key server. If there is a connection failure to the server you can continue working for three hours without any problems. After three hours you get the message that there is no license key available on the computer. In addition, the ALM on the server reserves the license for the computer for three hours in the case of power failure. If the connection is not restored after three hours, the Automation License Manager releases the license again for every user.
License Key in the Network
- Central storage of the license keys on one server

In the instructions below the server is the computer that makes the licenses available. And the client is the computer that uses the licenses from the server.
Enable remote access for the license keys on the the license server via the ALM under "File > Settings".
Now go to your workstation computer and close all the SIMATIC applications.
||Log on to the local computer via "File > Change Logon" of the Automation License Manager.
||If not available, add the license computer via "Edit > Connect computer" on your local computer.
||Check the setting in the ALM with the menu command "File > Settings > Favorites". The license server "Server PC" must be entered here.
||Now you can use the license of the license server.|
More information is also available in the ALM Online Help under
- "Computer connection failure".
User Management with Logon
||Open the SIMATIC Logon Service via "File > Change Logon" and log on.
||Open the "SIMATIC Logon Admin Tool" dialog via "File > User Management".|
||Right-click "Roles" and create a new role in the pop-up menu.|
||Under the new "ALM-PG3" role select "Groups and Users" and edit them.
||Now select the required rights and copy them via drag-and-drop into the top right window. Save the changes and then log on with the new role logon.
||Now it is no longer permissible to transfer the license, because the rights required are not there. The administrator can assign this rights via the Admin tool. The licenses can be used by any registered user, but cannot be moved.|
