Instructions:
In order to run STEP 7 in Microsoft Windows XP with standard user rights STEP 7 must have Full Control access to the folder in which it is installed. Since when you install the standard user as default setting, Full Control is not assigned, so you have to make the appropriate settings subsequently. The table below explains how you can assign read and write rights as well as Full Control access for a drive, for example, in Windows XP.

No. Procedure
1 In the Explorer you mark the drive to be assigned with the cursor, right-click and then in the pop-up menu that opens you select either
  • the "Properties" for the driver or
  • the menu command "Sharing and Security...".

2 In the "Properties" dialog select the "Security" tab. Here, as you can see in Fig. 02, you assign the read and write rights by marking the relevant options. For installing STEP 7 you activate the option "Full Control". If projects are stored on NTFS drives, then you must also assign "Full Control" for these drives to the standard users. Save the settings with the "Apply" button and close the dialog with the "OK" button.

Note:
If when installing STEP 7 you get the message "Cannot create folder", check the "SYSTEM" account. In the case of NTFS-formatted hard disks you can change the Security settings (access rights). These should be set so that the "SYSTEM" account has Full Control access. The "SYSTEM" account might first have to be added ." via the "Add..." button.

3 You also have the option of viewing more information about the permissions by clicking the "Advanced" button. In the "Advanced Security Settings for ..." dialog (Fig. 03) you mark the required user and then click on the "Change..." button. In the "Permission Entry for Data (D:)" dialog that opens you can then allow or deny other permissions for the user concerned. Then save with "OK".

If the "Security" tab is missing in Windows XP, open the folder options in the Windows Explorer via "Tools > Folder Options..." and select the "View" tab. Here you disable the option "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)".

Note:
To work with STEP 7 you need read and write permissions for the drive on which you have installed STEP 7 and the options packages. If you only have read permission for the drive concerned, you might get the following error message when you start STEP 7 or one of the options packages (e.g. CFC):

  • "Read-only access to the data".
