What are the basic requirements for data exchange between COMOS and SIMATIC PCS 7?Go to beginning
Part number:

Description
You must install the systems below to be able to exchange data between COMOS V10.0 SP1 and SIMATIC PCS 7.

Requirements
COMOS and PCS 7 on one computer
Install
  • COMOS V10.0 SP1 (or higher version) and the Automation Interface component
  • SIMATIC PCS 7 V7.1 SP2 (or higher version)

Note
Here you must note that with PCS 7 V7.1 SP2 you can only exchange data that PCS 7 V7.1 SP2 can handle. For example, the newly added control module types in PCS 7 V8.0 can only be exchanged in conjunction with PCS 7 V8.0.

COMOS and PCS 7 on different computers
Install:

Computer 1:

  • SIMATIC PCS 7 V7.1 SP2 (or higher version)
  • SIMATIC XML Transfer from the COMOS V10.0 SP1 DVD (or higher version)

Computer 2:

  • COMOS V10.0 SP1 (or higher version)
  • SIMATIC XML Transfer from the COMOS V10.0 SP1 DVD (or higher version)
  • SIMATIC PCS 7 V7.1 SP2 or higher with the programs below from the PCS 7 Installation DVD:
    - STEP 7
    - CFC
    - TH and IEA-PO

Notes

  • XML Transfer requires a SIMATIC PCS 7 installation. Using the trial licenses supplied with PCS 7 is sufficient because PCS 7 does not need to be started on the second computer.
  • Here you must note that with PCS 7 V7.1 SP2 you can only exchange data that PCS 7 V7.1 SP2 can handle. For example, the newly added control module types in PCS 7 V8.0 can only be exchanged in conjunction with PCS 7 V8.0.

Why should you not install the Microsoft security patches KB2467174, KB2467175, KB2465361 and KB2465367 in WinCC, PCS 7 and WinCC Professional V11?Go to beginning
Part number:

Description
Installation of one of the Microsoft security patches KB2467174, KB2467175, KB2465361 or KB2465367 causes a massive drain on resources (increase in handles) in WinCC Runtime (OS Runtime, WinCC Runtime Professional V11). This consumption of resources can lead to a standstill of WinCC Runtime.
It is strongly recommended not to install any of the Microsoft security patches KB2467174, KB2467175, KB2465361 or KB2465367.

Detailed information about these Microsoft security patches is available at these links:

A remedy is given in the entries below under the corresponding KB numbers.

Why can different versions of PCS 7 not be operated in mixed mode?Go to beginning
Part number:

Description:
PCS 7 projects only support the use of a single version of PCS 7 products. Any mixed combinations of PCS 7 versions (e.g. PCS 7 V 4.02, V5.x, V6.0 and V6.1) are not supported.

Furthermore, stand-alone versions of standard SIMATIC software (SFC, CFC etc.) cannot be used for work on PCS 7 projects. There are important PCS 7-specific functions in the engineering station (ES) which are only active if PCS 7 ES is installed.

In addition, in the case of WinCC multi-client/client-server systems, the same WinCC service packs and hotfixes must be installed on the computers affected.

Note:
However, you can leave the blocks and firmware unchanged on the controller side (e.g. PCS 7 V5.0) but upgrade the engineering station and the operating station (e.g. to  PCS 7 V5.2, V6.0 or V6.1 ). There is detailed information available in the release notes for the version compatibility (Upgrading without new functionality).

Notes

  • Since the IM 467 does not support CiR (Configuration in Run) and cannot be used for an H system, this module is not released for PCS 7. The IM 467 can be considered as a simplified version of the CP443-5 Extended. The IM 467 functions are also available with CP443-5 Extended, which is why CP443-5 Extended is to be used and a CP443-5 Extended is to be configured in HW Config.
  • The benefits of PCS 7, such as plant hierarchy, PCS 7 libraries, SFC and PCS 7 message system (Alarm_8P block. for instance), are not supported by S7-300 CPUs. The range of functions of the S7-300 CPUs is not sufficient for this. The S7-300 CPUs can be edited without using PCS 7 blocks and functions (libraries) with the SIMATIC Manager (including HW Config) and be programmed with CFC. The sample application "Integration of S7-300 Package Units into SIMATIC PCS 7 with the PCS 7 Industry Library" describes, among other things, the configuration steps for the integration of S7-300 CPUs in the form of package units into PCS 7.

Why can't you use Service Packs for Microsoft Windows, the MS SQL Server or the Internet Explorer if they do not originate from the CDs/DVD provided with the PCS 7 software?Go to beginning
Part number:

Description:
The PCS 7 OS software always includes by default a Microsoft Windows Service Pack, the MS SQL Server and the software for the Internet Explorer. This software has been specially put together and matched for PCS 7. It also includes components that are not available on the software CDs supplied by Microsoft.
Thus it is not possible use a Service Pack downloaded from the Microsoft Support pages, for example, even if it apparently has the identical version number.

So you must use only the software packages supplied with the PCS 7 software.

Notes:

  • This applies only for Service Packs and not for Security Patches. If it is necessary to install a Microsoft Security Patch from the Microsoft Support pages, then an explicit release for this will not be issued. Details are explained in Entry ID 18490004 .
  • The statements above do not apply for the pcAnywhere software. You can use the original from Symantec with the relevant version number. More information on the compatibility of versions of pcAnywhere with versions of PCS 7 is available in Entry ID: 2334224 .

What support does Microsoft provide for Microsoft products (operating systems and Internet Explorer) implemented with PCS 7?Go to beginning
Part number:

Support phases
Support for Microsoft products is divided into 3 phases.

Fig. 01

General
Microsoft provides support for security updates for at least 10 years for business and developer products (not valid for XP Home, for example, for which support is provided for only 5 years).

In the Mainstream Support Phase and in the first two years of the Extended Support Phase security updates are provided via "Microsoft Updates".

In the last three years of the Extended Support Phase, very important or critical security updates are published on the Microsoft Download Center website.

Support for service packs ends either 12 months after release of the next service pack or at the end of support for the basic product, whichever is first the case.

1. Mainstream Support Phase (for all products)
Microsoft provides a Mainstream Support Phase of at least 5 years from the time the product becomes generally available.

Security Update Support:

  • General Hotfixes
  • Free Incident Support
  • Billable Support by Telephone or Internet
  • Support Services on Hourly Basis
  • Support for Warranty Claims
2. Extended Support Phase (not for all products)
For specific products Microsoft provides an Extended Support Phase for 5 years as of the end of the Mainstream Support Phase.
  • Security-related hotfix support provided free of charge.
  • All billable support options.
  • The general hotfix support requires a separate contract.
  • During the Extended Support Phase, Microsoft does not accept any requests for warranty support, changes to the design or new features.

3. Self Help Online Support (for all products)
The Online Support is available for at least 10 years as of release of the product. Online Support provides customers the opportunity of finding solutions to their technical problems themselves round the clock and free of charge via the Knowledge Base, FAQs and News Groups.

  • Accompanying support upon release of the product.

Note
The information you can find here is not exhaustive. You will find the latest information about Microsoft Support Lifecycle at this link:

Which Microsoft Patches ("Security Patches" and "Critical Patches") have been tested for compatibility with SIMATIC PCS 7?Go to beginning
Part number:

Instructions
Microsoft regularly rectifies security gaps in its products and makes these fixes available to its customers in the form of official patches. This usually happens every second Tuesday in the month, on so-called "Patch Tuesday". Microsoft divides up the updates into numerous different classifications
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824684/EN-US/
and
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824684/de).

However, you only have to install "Security Patches" and "Critical Patches" to ensure that SIMATIC PCS 7 operation is secure and stable. For this reason, a PCS 7 test configuration has been set up in order to test the compatibility of the PCS 7 software with the above-mentioned patch classifications ("Security Patches" and "Critical Patches"). This system always features the very latest of the released versions of PCS 7 and Microsoft products released for operating these versions of PCS 7. Keeping pace with the updates published by Microsoft, compatibility tests with the latest released versions of PCS 7 are performed on the test system.
The attached table in xls format provides precise information about the Microsoft "Security Patches" and "Critical Patches" which are tested for compatibility. As far as possible, this is updated within two weeks after publication of the latest updates of the classification designated.
If reflects the Microsoft products installed in the PCS 7 test configuration. Therefore, a discrepancy between this list and the products installed in the project cannot be excluded. If a system requires more updates than contained in the published list, these updates are requested according to the additional installed products / software components. In this case, it is up to the user to install these updates.
We recommend installing all the available updates of both the named classifications to ensure that the system is protected.
However, we cannot say anything about the compatibility of such updates that we have not tested. Therefore, we recommend installing all the updates in separate project-specific test environment prior to rolling out the updates in the productive environment.

Important note on Microsoft Patches KB 943459 and KB 971468Go to beginning
Part number:

Description
When using Microsoft operating system Windows Server 2003 SP1 or SP2, there can be rare cases of blocking on the OS clients if two clients (one after another) access the same runtime screen (*.pdl). Operation of the OS client is disrupted (hour glass) during this blocking.
The error that leads to this behavior is in the Kerberos ticket handling of the Microsoft operating system Windows Server 2003.

KB 943459 has been updated by Microsoft for Windows Server 2003 SP2 with KB 971468 (also available via WSUS).

More detailed information about Microsoft Patches is available in the entries below.

Important note when using Microsoft's automatic update service in PCS 7.Go to beginning

Instructions:

Important note when using Microsoft's automatic update service in PCS 7.

The automatic update service must be disabled with SIMATIC PCS 7!

If the update service is enabled, there is a danger that new software packages, service packs, hotfixes etc. will be installed by Windows components, which under certain circumstances might cause problems with PCS 7 if the constellation has not yet been tested and officially released.
New packages issued by Microsoft should only be installed after thorough testing for compatibility (e.g. with reference to the PCS 7 Release Notes).

Option 1 for disabling:
You can disable the automatic update service if necessary in the Control Panel by double-clicking on the "Automatic Updates" icon and deselecting the relevant option.

Option 2 for disabling:
By disabling the "Automatic Updates" service under:

  • "Computer Management > Services and Applications > Services" or
  • "Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administration > Services > "Automatic Updates"

Note:
The SIMATIC Rack PC IL 40 S was supplied for a time with "Restore" Images in which the Microsoft automatic update service is enabled. You must disable this after a "Restore".

You must make special arrangements for the following system configurations:

No. System configuration
1 Central software update server for office and system networks
If you are using a common SUS for your office network and the PCS 7 system network, which automatically receives the updates from the Microsoft servers and automatically distributes these to the PCs in the office and PCS 7 system networks, you must make sure that the PCS 7 system PCs do not receive these software updates!
2 Automatic update service enabled on the PCS 7 system PCs upon access to the Internet
If your PCS 7 system PCs have a direct Internet access and the automatic update service is started on these PCs, then please disable the automatic update service or make sure that the PCS 7 system PCs do not have a direct Internet access!

Therefore we recommend that either you install the Microsoft Security Patches manually or you assign the updates to the various networks via a dedicated software update server.

Note:
In the case of the PC bundles released for PCS 7 V6.1 in the ST PCS 7 catalog, the automatic update service is disabled by default for security reasons. Please note that this automatic update service is switched on in most other PCs!

The language versions MUI (Multilingual User Interface (tested with German, English and French)), German, English and French of the Microsoft Windows operating systems have been released and tested for SIMATIC PCS 7 V6.x. As per the SIMATIC PCS 7 Catalog, MUI versions are supplied by default with Bundle PCs. Please also note the correlation between PCS 7 and the Windows operating system in Entry ID: 2334224.

Valid up as from SIMATIC PCS 7 V6.1 SP1
The language versions MUI (Multilingual User Interface (tested with German, English, French, Italian, Spanish and (simplified) Chinese)), German, English and French of the Microsoft Windows operating systems have been released and tested for SIMATIC PCS 7 V6.1 SP1 and higher. As per the SIMATIC PCS 7 Catalog, MUI versions are supplied by default with Bundle PCs. Please also note the correlation between PCS 7 and the Windows operating system in Entry ID: 2334224.
Note:
With the Chinese language setting of the MUI version, please refer to the notes in "Readme.wri", section 1.4.

Which Microsoft Windows 2000 MUI updates are released for PCS 7 V6.x?

The Microsoft Windows 2000 MUI Update is released for SIMATIC PCS 7 V6.0 + SP1 and higher.

In Windows 2000 with Multilingual User Interface (MUI), menus, window bars and the Internet Explorer contain English texts although the setting has been changed in the Regional and Language Options to menus and dialogs in German. The localization coverage by Microsoft is only about 90% in Windows 2000, as described in English at http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/DrIntl/faqs/MUIFaq.mspx#MUIques4.

"..The percentage of localization coverage in Windows 2000 with MUI is about 90%. In Windows 2000 with MUI, there are many visible strings that appear in English. One of the most noticeable areas is the Start Menu. This is because the Start Menu is populated directly using the file names of folders and link files created at setup time. They appear in English even if you are running on a MUI system with Japanese User Interface, as English was the original installation language."

A solution for Internet Explorer 6 is also available. This is described in an article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

Important information on the Microsoft Patches KB829019 (Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0) and KB887616 (Office 2003 Service Pack 2)
We would like to point out that in our PCS 7 system test incompatibilities were discovered with the following Microsoft Patches in conjunction with CAS (Central Archive Server) and Storage Plus in the PCS 7 V6.1 + SP1 software environment.
Patch KB829019 contains a newer version (V2.0) of .NET Framework and Patch KB887616 contains the Service Pack 2 of Office 2003.
The incompatibility is caused by .NET Framework V2.0 and impairs the trend display in the StoragePlus WebViewer.
Therefore, do not install these Microsoft patches and generally prevent installation of .NET Framework V2.0 on PCS 7 V6.1 + SP1 systems.

Please note when implementing a Windows Software Update Server that under certain circumstances the patches are installed automatically in the PCS 7 system by the Microsoft Windows Software Update Service if you do not configure the Windows Software Update Service accordingly.
Therefore you should make the necessary technical arrangements so that Microsoft patches KB829019 and KB887616 cannot be installed automatically and also not manually in PCS 7 systems.

Note:
In the case of the IL 43 PC bundles released for PCS 7 V6.1 + SP1 in the ST PCS 7 catalog, the Automatic Update service is disabled by default for security reasons. Please note that this Automatic Update service is switched on in most other PCs!
