Can a STEP 7 project from a current version be edited in a previous version?
STEP 7 projects are downwards compatible to the previous versions. Projects created in version 5.4 can also be edited in version 5.3. A prerequisite is that the project created in STEP 7 V5.4 cannot contain any components and functions not supported by the previous version, such as new CPU modules or new functions (such as access protection or SIMATIC Version Trail).
If a STEP 7 V5.4 project is to be processed, for example with STEP 7 V5.3, then you can only use module order numbers that are known in version V5.3 in the V5.4 project. If necessary, you should configure new modules with the "predecessor order number".
In future you will be able to "retroload" new modules as of STEP 7 V5.2 .
Refer also to the note in the readme file in section 6.6 "Changing between the different versions of STEP 7", "New modules in old versions of STEP 7". If you open or dearchive a project in STEP 7 version V5.2 that has been created in version V5.3 or V5.4, the following messages might be displayed. As a consequence, you can only read the hardware configuration.
S7 Hardware Update options package not available.
The project includes objects of the "Hardware Update" options package that cannot be processed because the options package is not installed or an obsolete version of it is installed.

Can the communication cards CP5511 and CP5512 be used with STEP 7 V5.4 in MS Windows Vista?
STEP 7 is released in Windows Vista Ultimate and Business as of version V5.4 SP3. STEP 7 is not released in Windows Vista Home Basic or Premium. To use the communication cards, note that the
CP5512 is released in Windows Vista, the driver is integrated in STEP 7,
CP5511 is not released in Windows Vista.
More information is available in the readme file under "Notes on using communication cards in PCs/PGs (section 4.4.2).
3
Which version of STEP 7 fully supports the scroll wheel functions of the Microsoft wheel mice?
As of version 5.2, STEP 7 supports the scroll wheel function of the Microsoft wheel mice. However, you must install the driver for your mouse separately (the Windows default driver is not sufficient here). The driver is supplied by your mouse manufacturer, usually on a separate CD.
Once you have installed the mouse driver, restart the computer and a mouse icon is displayed in the task bar (next to the clock). Open the Control Panel via "Start > Settings > Control Panel" and double-click on the "Mouse" icon. You can make additional mouse settings in the dialog window "Mouse Properties".

Why are the symbolic names not available if a program created with STEP 7 V5.4 is downloaded from the CPU into the PG with STEP 7 V5.3?
Please refer to the information in the STEP 7 Online Help under
"Downloading from the PLC into the PG",
"Load station into PG..."
The blocks are stored in the CPU irrespective of the STEP 7 version without symbols and comments. To keep the assignment of the symbols and comments for your program, load the program back into the associated project.

Configuring Hardware and Communication Connections with STEP 7 V5.5
05/2010
01: "Basics of Configuring Hardware with STEP 7"
03 "Configuring the Distributed I/O (DP)"
11 "Configuring Connections"
Instructions: If you edit a project that contains objects which have been created with software package, then you need that software package for editing the project. When you open a project it is automatically checked for the software packages required. Then the software packages missing on your system are displayed.
First you get the message indicating that one or more objects of a type cannot be displayed and that the server S7 ... could not be loaded. Acknowledge this message with OK. You are then presented with a list of the names of the missing software packages (e.g. S7-HiGraph - Fig. 01).
Fig. 01
Mark the project name in the SIMATIC Manager and select the Project Properties dialog via Edit > Object Properties. In the dialog that opens you select the Required software packages tab. This displays a list of all the software packages used for this STEP 7 project and whether or not they are installed on your PC.
Fig. 02
For example, if you wish to forward projects you have created yourself to other persons (e.g. colleagues / business partners), then for project editing it is useful to know which software packages are required. In this way you can adapt your project to your colleagues' STEP 7 installation, which might not be as extended as yours.
For this you select the project in the SIMATIC Manager and then the menu command Edit > Object Properties > Tab: Required software packages". Here you will find an overview of the software packages required for editing this project.
Fig. 03
The information on the software packages required is complete if:
the project (or all the projects in a multiproject) or the library have been created with STEP 7 V5.2 or higher
the project has been checked for software packages used - the check is made automatically when you open or dearchive an S7 project.
Why does a message appear indicating that a foreign language has to be installed in the operating system when a project is opened from STEP 7 version V5.3 SP2?
Description: From STEP 7 version V5.3 SP2, the system outputs a message indicating that the project can only be opened in the Windows language specified;
in projects which have been newly created from STEP 7 V5.3 SP2 and
which have been created in an operating system language which does not correspond to one of the STEP 7 languages or
the current Windows language, and
if the project has not been set to be language-neutral.
Please follow the instructions in the Readme file (section 2.26 Information about using foreign-language character sets). From STEP 7 V5.3 SP2 you can use foreign language character sets other than the STEP 7 language set. However, the setting for this requested character set must be defined in the operating system.
If you wish to open your STEP 7 project or your library under any language setting, you have to activate the option
"Can be opened in any language in the Windows Regional and Language Option (l. neutral)"
in the project's object properties. Follow the procedure described in the table below.
No.
Procedure
1
Set the operating system to the language which has been used to create the project. To switch the operating system to another language, you must change the settings for the menus and dialogs in the Control Panel. You can find information about this setting procedure in our FAQ
"How to switch the operating system to English"
, which you can find on the Internet in Entry ID 22309945 .
2
Then, in order to back up your STEP 7 project, make a copy of your project via "File > Save as...".
3
Highlight the name of the project in the SIMATIC Manager and right-click it. Then select "Object properties" in the pop-up menu that opens.
Fig. 01
4
Go to the "General" tab in the "Properties - Project" dialog and enable the following option:
"Can be opened in any language in the Windows Regional and Language Option (l. neutral)"
and click OK to confirm the message which appears then.
Fig. 02
After saving with OK, you can use the project or library in different language-speaking areas with different character sets. Multiple projects are always created on a language-neutral basis.
Note:
A project should only be set to be language-neutral if the programmer is sure that no language-specific characters have been used in this project (which would lead to nonsensical characters in another operating system language).
These instructions have been verified with STEP 7 V5.3.

Which foreign language character sets and special characters can be used in STEP 7?
Configuration Notes:
The following table contains some information on the foreign language character sets and special characters in STEP 7:
No.
Foreign language character sets and special characters in STEP 7:
1
Foreign language character sets:
From STEP 7 V5.3 SP2 you can use foreign language character sets in projects and libraries other than the STEP 7 language set. Requirements:
You must have Windows Multilingual User Interface (e.g. MS Windows XP MUI) installed on your PC and
The setting for this requested character set must be defined in the operating system.
More information is available in the STEP 7 Online Help under "Note on Using Foreign-Language Character Sets" and under "Settings the Windows Language." The following foreign language character sets are released under MS Windows MUI:
Japanese
Chinese (Simplified)
Korean
Russian
Greek
Also note the "Note on Using Foreign-Language Character Sets" (section 6) in the STEP 7 readme file.
2
Special characters in STEP 7:
From STEP 7 V5.2 you can enter special characters for documentation purposes or as a comment without any restrictions.
If you are using a version of STEP 7 < V5.2, then it might not be possible to enter special characters directly in every STEP 7 application. For example, in STEP 7 V5.1 it is possible to enter special characters directly in comment fields in the HW Config, but not in block or network comment fields in the LAD/FBD/STL editor.
In this case you can enter the special characters via the relevant ASCII codes. To enter characters via their ASCII codes you must press and hold the ALT key and enter the relevant code via the numbers keypad.
Please note that you cannot use special characters in every input field. For example, special characters are not usually permitted in tag names.
