Instructions:
Beside the system dictionary you can also establish your own user dictionary in WinCC flexible. You thus have the possibility of creating and editing texts for a specific project.

The table below gives an example of how to create a user dictionary. You can call and use this dictionary created on your computer in other projects.
Furthermore, you can copy the contents of a dictionary you have created outside WinCC flexible in order to use or further process files in another configuration on another computer, for example.

The table contains the following descriptions.

  1. Creating a user dictionary
  2. Inserting/copying texts into the dictionary
  3. Defining the storage location of the user dictionary
  4. Adding a user dictionary
  5. Removing a user dictionary
  6. Exporting texts from the user dictionary to Excel and importing them back again into the user dictionary
  7. Automatic translation of project texts
  8. Notes on using texts with line breaks
No. User dictionary
1 Creating a user dictionary

2 Inserting/copying texts into the dictionary
You have three options for inserting texts into the dictionary.
  1. Direct input of texts in the dictionary
  2. Copy individual texts into the dictionary
  3. Copy all project texts into the dictionary

1. Direct input of texts in the dictionary:
Open your configured dictionary and then enter the texts you need for your project.

2. Copy individual texts into the dictionary:

  • In the project window, double-click "Project Texts" in the "Language Settings" group to open the "Project Texts" editor.
This editor gives you access to all the texts in the project.
  • Mark the complete text line of the text that you want to copy into the user dictionary.
  • Right-click on the marked text line. In the pop-up menu you select the "Copy to Dictionary" item.
  • In the dialog that opens you select the required user dictionary and the language to be copied.

Repeat the steps just described until you have copied all the required texts into the user dictionary.

3 Defining the storage location of the user dictionary
If you wish to make your configured user dictionary available to other people or want to use it on a different computer, you can copy the UserDictionary.dct and UserDictionary_log.LDF files created from the Windows Explorer. For this you go to the drive on which you have installed WinCC, usually drive C:.

The two files are located in the Windows Explorer in the following path, for example:
"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Siemens AG\SIMATIC WinCC flexible"
(depending on the version of WinCC flexible used).

Or you use the search function of the Explorer to find the program files UserDictionary.dct  and UserDictionary_log.LDF.

Note:
Only one program file is ever created, regardless of how many user dictionaries or WinCC flexible projects you have configured.
It is not possible to edit the program file externally. You can only copy the program file to another computer, for example, in the above-mentioned program path and then edit it with WinCC flexible.

4 Adding a user dictionary
If you wish to access an already configured user dictionary in the newly created project, you use the menu entry
"Options > User Dictionaries > Add/remove User Dictionary" in WinCC flexible.
In the dialog window that opens you can select the relevant user dictionary or dictionaries.

5 Removing a user dictionary
If you want to permanently remove a user dictionary from the program file created (UserDictionary.dct / UserDictionary_log.LDF), you use the menu entry "Options > User Dictionaries > Add/remove User Dictionary" in WinCC flexible.
In the dialog window that opens you can select the relevant user dictionary or dictionaries.
Click on the "Delete permanently" button and the selected dictionary is deleted from the program file.

6 Exporting texts from the user dictionary to Excel and importing them back again into the user dictionary
If you have an extensive user dictionary and have to translate it into multiple languages, then it is often useful to give these texts to a translation agency.

Copying texts from the user dictionary and inserting them in Excel:

  • Open your user dictionary in the project window in the "Language Settings  > Dictionaries" group.
  • Mark all the texts using the key combination "Ctrl + A" and copy the marked texts using the key combination "Ctrl + C".
  • Open the relevant Excel sheet and paste the copied texts into it using the key combination "Ctrl V".

You can now add the translation texts required.

Inserting texts from Excel back into the user dictionary:

  • Mark the texts in the Excel sheet using the key combination "Ctrl + A".
  • Open your user dictionary in the project window in the "Language Settings  > Dictionaries" group.
  • Mark all the texts with the key combination "Ctrl + A".
  • Open the relevant user dictionary and paste the texts just copied from the Excel sheet into that dictionary using the key combination "Ctrl V".

The user dictionary now contains the translated texts.

Note:
You can also use the "right-click" pop-up menu instead of the key combinations "Ctrl + C" and "Ctrl + V".

Automatic translation of project texts
You have the option of having the texts translated automatically.
This is where your own user dictionaries come into use.

  • In the project window, double-click "Project Texts" in the "Language Settings" group to open the "Project Texts" editor.
This editor gives you access to all the texts in the project.
  • In the list of project texts there is a separate column for each language used.
Mark a single empty line in the column of each language required.
    • You can mark lines across columns.
    • You can mark multiple lines together.
  • Right-click on the marked field.
    A pop-up menu opens.
Here you choose the "Automatic" item.
  • Translation is started and the number of translated texts is displayed.

Note:
Only empty fields can be translated. If a translation already exists, it is not overwritten.

8 Notes on using texts with line breaks
Section 6 "Exporting texts from the user dictionary to Excel and importing them back again into the user dictionary" describes how to copy texts from the user dictionary to Excel.
If the texts you copy from the user dictionary to Excel have line breaks, these are not adopted by Excel.

Remedy:
In WinCC flexible, you can import and export texts via the menu item "Options > Texts >". Detailed instructions for this are available in Entry ID: "21752508".

After exporting the texts, you can assign the relevant "line breaks" to the texts to be translated in Excel.
You generate a line break in Excel with the key combination "Alt + Enter".

After importing the translated texts, the "Project texts" folder contains all the texts including "line breaks".
Then continue following the instructions in Section 2 "Inserting/copying texts into the dictionary".
