The MMC is used as plug-in loading memory. In addition, the MMC can be used to save the complete STEP7 project, including comments and symbolics. A bigger MMC is required if these functions are to be used.
Data blocks to save data can be created on the MMC with the aid of new SFCs. Similarly, an SFC can be used to read data saved on the MMC during runtime. These new functions also require a bigger MMC type.

CBA Functionality
The CBA functionality integrated in the CPU 315-2 PN/DP enables a technological modularization of the machines and plant, resulting in significant advantages: Plants are better to standardize and can be re-used or extended more easily. This permits a quicker and more flexible response to customer requirements and also shortens and simplifies commissioning by enabling pre-testing at the component level.

PROFINET IO
Within the PROFINET framework, PROFINET IO is a communication concept for the implementation of modular, decentralized applications.
PROFINET IO is based on Industrial Ethernet and permits the connection of distributed field and I/O devices to the CPU.

Compatibility
The CPU 315-2PN/DP is fully compatible with the new-generation S7-300 CPUs (with MMC and without backup battery).

STEP 7
The new CPU can be configured with STEP7 version 5.3 SP2 and higher. An HSP file is available for version 5.3 SP1. Older STEP 7 versions cannot be used to program the new CPU.
