Summary Internet document

From September 2004 onwards, a revised function description will be available for the option "SINUMERIK Safety Integrated". Additional danger and warning information/instructions will appear in this revised function description. We would like to take this opportunity and inform you, in advance, about these new danger and warning information/instructions.

Internet document Summary

The following additional hazard and warning information will appear in the new function description for SINUMERIK Safety Integrated:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Warning

When the system runs-up, this represents a critical operating state where increased risk is present. In this phase, especially when activating the drives, it is not permissible that personnel are present in the hazardous area.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Warning

After changing or replacing hardware – and/or software – components it is only permissible to run-up the system and activate the drives with the protective equipment and devices in the closed state. It is not permissible that personnel are present in the hazardous area.

Depending on the change or replacement, it may be necessary to carry-out a new, powerful or complete acceptance test.

Before entering the hazardous area, the drives should be tested to ensure that they behave in a stable, predictable fashion, by briefly traversing them in both directions (+/-).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Warning

If the "safe standstill" or "Stop A" function is activated, the motor can no longer generate any torque. As a result of this, a potentially hazardous motion can occur, for example in the following cases:

·         External force can act on the drive axes

·         Vertical and inclined axes without weight equalization

·         Axes that are in motion (coast-down)

·         Direct drives with low friction and self-locking

The possible hazards should be identified by carrying-out a risk analysis that must be executed by the manufacturer. Using the evaluation based on this risk analysis it should be defined as to which additional measures are required - e.g. external brakes.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Warning

If the "safe operating stop" function is activated, when a fault condition occurs, the axis mechanical system can manifest a jerk motion due to the principle of operation. The magnitude of this motion depends on the following parameters:

·         Design/structure and ratio relationships of the motor/mechanical system

·         Velocity/speed and acceleration capability of the motor

·         Magnitude of the selected monitoring clock cycle

·         Magnitude of the selected standstill tolerance window

 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In order to avoid injury to personnel and damage to machines, the above hazard and warning information must be carefully observed at all times.
