New: SIMATIC WinAC Slot 412/416 V3.4
Part number:
Summary Internet document

The new versions of the SIMATIC WinAC Slot 412 and SIMATIC WinAC Slot 416 now permit even more compact automation designs and better integration in automation solutions.

Internet document Summary

Application

SIMATIC WinAC Slot 412 and 416 are PC-based controllers for integration in a PC in the form of a PCI card. They are particularly suitable for applications requiring a higher degree of immunity against breakdown of the controller and also when additional PC tasks, such as optimization, recipe management and archiving, as well as technological tasks such as measuring value or image processing, are to be solved.

The new versions feature innovated interfaces for open integration, as well as the possibility for more compact PC-based controller solutions:

  • Use of the SIMATIC NET OPC server
  • Multi CPU support
  • More motion with FM353 and FM354
  • Simplified PC user rights
  • FW Update via file
  • Further development of the Open Development interfaces

New features

SIMATIC NET OPC Server

From now on, WinAC Slot will be using the SIMATIC NET OPC (SN OPC) server. Compared to the previous SIMATIC Computing solution, SN OPC offers a number of advantages:

  • Support of important OPC interfaces, such as Alarm&Events.
  • Browsing of OPC items is now also available for standard data objects (bit memories, DB), even if no symbolics are being used.
  • Downloading of the symbolics from STEP7, without first having to create a symbol file (Tag File) with a special tool.
  • Performance improvement by a factor 5 - 10 (depends on the OPC Client used)

The SN OPC is a uniform OPC Server for the complete SIMATIC family. Its advantage is that all the SIMATIC components become accessible from a single point (PC) in the system. This means that a single OPC Server can be used to exchange data with all the CPUs of a system or plant.

Multi CPU operation

WinAC Slot V3.4 enables the operation of up to four WinAC Slot PLCs in one PC. Alternatively, one WinAC Software PLC (WinAC Basis/RTX, version V4.1 and higher) can be operated with up to three WinAC Slot PLCs (in preparation).

The CPUs in one PC can communicate with one another via the S7 communications mechanisms (BSEND/BRCV), but in other respects work independently of one another (comparable with the operation of S7-400 CPUs in a segmented rack, e.g. CR1). In addition, all the CPUs can be connected simultaneously to a SIMATIC ProTool /Pro, WinCC or SN OPC installation.

This feature permits a significant increase in the compactness and density of integration of  automation solutions, resulting in lower costs due to reduced space requirements and saving of a PC.

The following combinations have been released:

  • up to 2 WinAC Slot 412/416 with PS Extension Board
  • up to 4 WinAC Slot 412/415 without PS Extension Board

Note: If retentiveness or an external voltage supply are required, a PS Extension Board must be provided for each WinAC Slot.

More motion

WinAC Slot V3.4 supports the following FMs:

  • SIMATIC FM 353: Positioning module for stepper motors in machines with high clock-pulse rates; Can be used for simple point-to-point positioning and for complex motion profiles.
  • SIMATIC FM 354: Positioning module for servo motors in machines with high clock-pulse rates; Can be used for simple point-to-point positioning and for complex motion profiles.

Operation is in a distributed configuration via PROFIBUS DP as part of an ET200M station.

Simplified PC user rights

The new version of WinAC Slot V3.4 no longer requires administrator rights to be able to operate WinAC Slot via the CPU Panel. The table below provides an overview of the required user rights:

Activity

Possible User Rights

Installation

Administrator

Setting up a PC Station

Administrator, Main User

Operating a WinAC Slot

Administrator, Main User, User, Guest

This is of particular avantage in the case of plants where individual machines of different OEMs are combined or networked to form a complete system at the final destination. The owner of the plant will usually not want to grant administrator rights of his network to the OEMs, but only local access to the PCs belonging to the relevant machine.

It avoids administration conflicts during erection, commissioning and operation of PC-based automation solutions that are part of an overall system.

FW Update via file

WinAC Slot now permits post-loading of the latest firmware version in the form of a file via the PC. The files used in this case are the same as those used previously with STEP7 for creating a FW update memory card (downloaded from the Internet).

This feature will reduce the maintenance work for existing installations, because the PC no longer has to be opened and booted multiple times for a firmware update with memory card.

Note: To be able to use this function with existing installations of WinAC Slot, the CPU 416-2 PCI (PCI module) must first be upgraded. This upgrade is available at a charge. Please speak to your SIMATIC contact at your local Siemens office about further details.

Further development of the Open Development interfaces

The WinAC Slot T-Kit with its Dual-Port Memory interface to the CPU was introduced together with WinAC Slot V3.2. Many users consider it easy to use, because the "shared memory" principle was already used widely with SIMATIC S5 ("page-frame programming") and with the DP-DP coupler.

In the future this interface will also be supported for WinAC software PLCs. In order to ensure optimum support by the WinAC Software and Slot PLCs, taking into consideration the new feature "Multi CPU", the following changes had to be made in the use of the WinAC Slot T-Kit:

  • Integration of the WinAC Slot T-Kit in WinAC ODK V4.1
In the future the "WinAC Open Development Kit" (ODK) engineering package will be available to the whole WinAC family.
  • The T-Kit Interface is now called Shared Memory eXtension interface (SMX)
This interface thus has an independent name for Software and Slot PLCs, which will help to avoid confusion with the name of the engineering package.
  • The SMX Interface has been extended for Multi-CPU operation
The requiredcommunication partner is now addressed via the CPU name. In the case of Multi-CPU operation a Slot or Software PLC can now be specifically selected. However, existing T-Kit applications can still be re-used by means of a compatibility DLL.

In addition to the SMX interface, WinAC Slot PLCs now also have a new "Controller Management Interface" (CMI), permitting remote control of the operation of WinAC Slot by means of a customer application. All functions of the WinAC CPU panel can be integrated with this interface to a specific customer application.

Note: The WinAC ODK V4.1 is under preparation. Please speak to your SIMATIC contact at your local Siemens office about further details. However, you can also continue to use the WinAC Slot T-Kit V3.3 for the development of applications using the Dual Port Memory interface of WinAC Slot.
