QUESTION:
What should you watch out for when installing a SIMATIC RACK PC of
the IL40 series using the Restore CD?
ANSWER:
On IL40 computers, the graphics card settings after restoring the
system using the Restore CD supplied are set to a resolution of
1280x1024 pixels at an image refresh rate of 85 Hz.
If you are using an older monitor that doesn’t support these
settings, this might lead to you getting a black screen after
startup of the operating system.
The screen is correct during the boot procedure and startup of the
operating system in VGA mode, but as soon as a switch is made to
the graphical user interface (e.g. logon screen), depending on the
type of monitor the graphics card signal is shut off to protect the
monitor electronics or the screen displays a distorted image.
Remedy:
Boot the operating system in VGA mode and change to the
resolution/refresh rate to a combination that the monitor
supports.
In MS Windows 2000 you can call an options menu with the "F8" key
whilst the operating system is starting up and activate the VGA
mode there.
