Part number:

Description
The parameterization interface of the FM 354 is designed for rotary position encoders. This interface also supports the entry of encoder data for an absolute, linear position encoder (for instance, a linear rule or a laser distance meter).

Sample parameterization
The following information is required from the rating plate on the encoder:

  • Number of steps or increments
  • Coding
  • Resolution or pitch period

Example
The following machine data is to be specified for a linear position encoder with a 25-bit gray code and a resolution of 0.005 mm.

Machine data number  Parameterized setting or value
MD 8
(axis type)
Linear axis
MD10
(encoder type)
SSI encoder with 25-bit gray code
MD11/12
(displacement per encoder revolution)
40.96 mm (MD13* encoder resolution)
MD13
(increments per encoder revolution)
8192
MD14
(number of revolutions, absolute encoder)
4096

Note
The displacement per encoder revolution is calculated from
"increments per encoder revolution" * "encoder resolution".

More information on machine data and position encoders is available in the FM 354 manual in Entry ID 2110628, section 5.3.1 "Machine Data" and section 9.6.2 "Absolute Encoders (SSI)".
