The SIMATIC NET PC Products Edition 2008 is herewith released for delivery and supports the following 32-bit operating systems (x86):

·Windows XP (SP2 and SP3)

·Windows Vista Ultimate, Business (incl. SP1)

·Windows Server 2003 Standard (R2 and SP2)

·Windows Server 2008 Standard

In addition, the existing products have been enhanced with new functions – here are the highlights:

·SIMATIC NET OPC Server

oIncrease of quantity framework – The previous quantity framework of the SIMATIC NET S7 OPC Server has been increased to 1 000 000 Items for OPC project download. Up to 500 000 Items are released for runtime (system operation). Our customers can now configure standard projects for many different systems with a large no. of items and only decide after downloading which items are required in the HMI tool for runtime.

oFast download– With the SIMATIC NET CD 2008 downloading of OPC projects is accelerated considerably. Customer OPC projects with several 100 000 items required download times of tens of minutes up to the SIMATIC NET CD 2007 (e.g. ~350 000 items: ~13-min. download time).
With this no. of items the new SIMATIC NET CD 2008 achieves download times of only a few seconds (e.g. ~350 000 items: ~25-sec. download time). This has no repercussions on the startup time of the OPC server after the download. Our customers can thus accomplish significant time savings with the engineering, for instance.

oOPC Unified Architecture – The SIMATIC NET CD 2008 features a new SIMATIC NET OPC UA server. In its first version this server supports the S7 protocol, additional protocols will follow later. OPC UA (Unified Architecture) is the new standard of the OPC Foundation. It will gradually replace the current Windows-dependent OPC standard. Its advantages are easier configuration (e.g. no COM/DCOM), better security levels (e.g. use of standard certifictes), unified address area, etc.

oOPC SCOUT V10– The new SIMATIC NET CD 2008 includes an innovated engineering and diagnostic tool (OPC SCOUT V10). It is, as before, free of charge for our customers and supports with commissioning, diagnosis, etc.. The OPC SCOUT V10 supports Data Access and now also Alarm & Events.

oEditable alarm messages – Alarm messages can now be adapted to the relevant application requirements via a freely editable file, e.g. "Alarm259" can become "Boiler temp. exceeds 60 deg". This editable file has been expanded with the parameter source. Users now have the option to add the exact plant section to the alarm message, e.g. "Hall 1".

·CP 1613 A2/CP 1623

oDCP Protocol – Support of the DCP protocol – customers can use it to easily and quickly display remote nodes and suitably initialize them (e.g. IP address) via the STEP7/PST Tool and CP 1613 A2/CP 1623

oAutomation MIB- The CP 1613 A2 and CP 1623 support those parts of the Automation MIB that are usable for the modules. Customers can use it to call or set very different data via SNMP, e.g. location deignation, date of manufacture, status of the external voltage supply (only CP 1623), etc.

·CP 1623

oOperating hour meter – An operating hour meter has been introduced for the CP1623. Customers can use it to interrogate the module status and determine the overall on-time of the PC system, in order to carry out preventive maintenance measures, for instance.

oTemperature monitoring – A temperature sensor has been introduced for the CP1623. Customers can use it to interrogate the temperature at the module.

·SOFTNET PN IO

oInnovation of SOFTNET PN IO – Customers can now use SOFTNET PN IO with all operating systems of the SIMATIC NET CD 2008, as well as all current functionalities of PROFINET IO (e.g. enhanced diagnosis).

The SNMP OPC-Server software enables access to SNMP-compatible devices in OPC-Client systems. This permits you to diagnose individual devices, going up to the complete plant, as well active control of device features. The extent and type of the diagnostic information and the control parameters depend on the individual scope of functions of the SNMP device.

1.5 DX OPC Server

Please note that the supply of the DX OPC Server has been discontinued effective October 01, 2008 (see entry ID 31507617). Edition 2008 (and subsequent) of this software will thus not be available.

1.6 SIMATIC NET S7-OPC-Server, Data Access on S7-OPC symbolic items of type ATI

The “IOPCItemIO“ OPC Data Access V3.0 interface for groupless reading and writing of S7-OPC symbolic items of type ATI has not been released for use. The “IOPCBrowse“ OPC Data Access V3.0 interface for browsing of the name area and for reading out item IDs and properties of S7-OPC symbolic items of type ATI is not released for simultaneous operation with several OPC Clients.

This information is also included with the affected products on a separate note.

We will inform you about a possible later release of the above functions via a separate bulletin.

1.7 Further details on the PC Software CD Edition 2008

Detailled information on the new version of the SIMATIC NET PC Software can be found in the files Liesmich ( 611 KB ) / Readme ( 530 KB ) which are also included on the SIMATIC NET CD Edition 2008.

The SIMATIC NET PC Software der Edition 2008 is now also released for use in SIMOTION applications. However, due to lack of time, this information is not included in the Liesmich/Readme files on the CD.

2. Upgrades and Software Update Service (SUS)

A specific Software Update Service for each SIMATIC NET PC product is available together with Edition 2008; it includes the supply of uprade packages.

5.   Installation – New features of Edition 2008 compared to predecessor versions
After you have inserted the CD ROM with the Software Edition 2008 or after you have called up Setup.exe you will get the option to install the following products or perform the following actions:
-         Display readme
-         Install SIMATIC NET software
-         Display SIMATIC NET documents
-         Abort

If predecessor versions of the products are available already, this will be checked and you will be asked for permission for the required uninstallation via a message box. The subsequent installation will upgrade any existing SIMATIC NET products to the current version of the relevant CD ROM. This will ensure a safe and consistent operational environment. Each of the products used requires an appropriate product license. Products without installed license key are in “Trial Mode“ and the lack of a license will be indicated during use.
